About W6GYC

Hello.  My name is Mike Jones, W6GYC.  I currently live in the city of Santa Clarita, California (grid DM04rl).  I currently hold a General class Amateur Radio license.

I was first licensed in 1991 as a No-Code Tech, with the call sign KC6YWT.  I obtained my HF privileges in 1995, when I obtained my Tech+ license.  After the CW requirements were lowered to 5WPM (I really did not do well with CW) for the General class license, I obtained that in 2001.  I got a vanity call, K6MHJ, in 2004.  In 2005, my Grandfather became a silent key, and I petitioned and received his call, W6GYC, in February of 2014.

I have, over the years, worked the VHF, UHF, and HF bands.  My main area of interest at this time is QRP and learning CW.

As of August, 2015, I am now a member of the Santa Clarita Emergency Communications Team (SCECT).  The team provides communications and backup communications during city sponsored events (concerts, parades, emergency drills and training),  communications during emergency situations, and fire watch in and around the city.

As of 2017, I am now, also, a volunteer examiner with the ARRL VEC group.
